Sutcliffe: Take it easy on Peavy
SEATTLE
Rick Sutcliffe reaffirmed the White Sox acquired a workhorse in Jake Peavy.
But Sutcliffe warned the Sox should be extremely cautious with Peavy while he recovers from a right ankle injury.
“He’s like a big old thoroughbred,” Sutcliffe said Wednesday in a telephone interview. “You have to take care of the reins.”
Peavy will make his first minor-league rehabilitation assignment for Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday night against Pawtucket. He is recovering from an injury that prevented him from throwing for six weeks while his foot was in a protective boot.
Sutcliffe said he spoke Wednesday with Peavy, who expressed hope he could pitch despite the threat of rain in the Charlotte area.
“If I had to win a game, he would be one of five on my mind,” Sutcliffe said. “This guy will do what he can to make his teammates better. He can be the enforcer if he has to.”
