Danieal Manning was not informed Thursday about his status for Saturday’s exhibition opener in Buffalo, but he did say the coaches “want me to get some rest.”
The likelihood of Manning suiting up against the Bills is doubtful as he continues to deal with a lingering hamstring injury. He sat out practice along with tight end Greg Olsen, who strained his hip Wednesday but intends to play.
With Manning likely out, rookie Al Afalava is sure to get a long look at safety alongside Kevin Payne. It also means a lot of nickel action for Corey Graham, who grew up in Buffalo.
As Charles Tillman (back surgery) and Zack Bowman (hamstring) continue to progress from their injuries, the Bears could enter their first exhibition without three starters from the secondary. And with Manning hobbled, the Bears have to fill two defensive positions plus special teams.
“Danieal does a lot for us,” coach Lovie Smith said. “Really like what he has been able to do at the nickel position. He gives us range at the free safety position that we really like. We need to get him back on the football field.”
At least the Bears defense won’t have to contend with Bills receiver Terrell Owens, who won’t play because of a sore toe that has kept him out of practice all week.
Quick returns: Manning’s injury means the Bears are likely to turn to another kick returner. Special teams coordinator David Toub said Devin Hester is next in line, although that might not be the case in an exhibition. Garrett Wolfe and Johnny Knox are in the mix as well.
Hester is willing to fill in for Manning.
“If I have to do it, I’m going to do it,” Hester said. “If [the coaches] say it, then that’s what it is.”
Family affair: Gill Byrd, the Bears’ assistant secondary coach, is sure to be a proud father Saturday. His son, Jairus, is a rookie safety with the Bills. The younger Byrd, who was drafted in the second round, continues to recover from sports hernia surgery.
“It’s going to be good to see him,” Byrd said. “Any time you have a son that’s playing in the National Football League and you’re a coach, it’s exciting.
“From what he has told me, he’s on the field now this week and he should be ready for Green Bay next week.”
Extra points: Bowman and Tillman did some light jogging during practice. … Jamar Williams returned to practice from a shoulder injury although he was limited. Tommie Harris was limited as well. … Lance Briggs had a nice one-handed interception. Nathan Vasher and D.J. Moore also had interceptions.
