Second baseman Chris Getz’s soreness in his right side lingered to the point where he had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

“I felt it pretty good on a slide into second,” Getz said of an oblique injury suffered Tuesday at Seattle. “It was to the point where it had to be addressed.”

The Sox believe Getz should be healed when he’s eligible to be activated Aug. 27.

“Sometimes these injuries are weird,” Getz said. “You have to be careful because you don’t want them to linger longer.”

Manager Ozzie Guillen said the Sox thought Getz’s ailment originally was a hernia injury until he had an MRI on Wednesday.

Jayson Nix will take over as the starting second baseman, with recently promoted Brent Lillibridge serving as insurance in the middle of the infield.

The promotion for Lillibridge was somewhat bittersweet because he didn’t want to be moved up because of an injury and because it came after the Sox left Seattle, about 30 minutes outside his Bothell, Wash., residence.

“I definitely looked at the schedule when they told me,” Lillibridge said.

“But I have an opportunity in September to go there, with a day off. I’ll be fine. I don’t want too much time at home.”

Draft update: The Sox are facing a Monday night deadline for signing supplemental third-round draft pick Bryan Morgado and seventh-round pick Justin Jones.

The Sox will receive a 2010 draft pick if Morgado isn’t signed. Morgado could return to Tennessee for his junior season. Morgado was 4-2 with a 6.36 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings for the Volunteers but pitched exceptionally well in the Cape Cod League this summer.

Jones is expected to honor his commitment to the University of California.
