Texans-sized headache for injured Grossman

More bad news about a former Bears quarterback. First Kyle Orton struggled in his Broncos debut. Now Houston’s Rex Grossman is expected to miss about a month with a hamstring injury he suffered on his first play Saturday, though he stayed in for four more — including a fumbled snap — before exiting. The Texans are looking to sign another quarterback to fill in until he’s healthy.

Grossman, Houston’s third quarterback and a former Bears starter, was injured in Saturday’s win over the Chiefs and coach Gary Kubiak says he doesn’t feel comfortable finishing the preseason with only Matt Schaub and backup Dan Orlovsky. Kubiak says the Texans could sign Alex Brink, who was with the team last season.

Also injured Saturday was safety Troy Nolan, a rookie seventh-round pick, who will have surgery to repair a broken hand on Monday and could miss the entire season.

Forgive him: Catholics willing to absolve Pitino

Rick Pitino’s personal failings should be forgiven and he should remain as head basketball coach at the University of Louisville, churchgoers in Kentucky said Sunday.

Some anti-abortion groups have called for the university to fire Pitino because a woman with whom he admitted having extramarital sex had an abortion soon after. But Catholics attending mass Sunday morning said the high-profile coach, a self-professed Roman Catholic, should be given another chance.

“I still think he’s a great man, he just put himself in a bad position and it’s a terrible blemish on his character,” said Arnold Brown, who attended an early mass Sunday at St. Frances of Rome, the Louisville church Pitino has attended.

Brown, 69, said he is a University of Kentucky fan but he “loves Rick Pitino,” who coached in the 1990s at Kentucky, where he led the Wildcats to the national championship in 1996.

Angle wrestling with some personal issues

Pro wrestler and Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle has been arrested on charges of possessing a human growth hormone and violating an order of protection in suburban Pittsburgh.

Angle was arrested around 7:50 a.m. Saturday in a strip mall parking lot. His girlfriend, who said she obtained a protection order about 1 1/2 hours earlier after the two fought Friday night, alleged he had circled the lot staring at her as she sat in a coffee shop, according to a police affidavit. Police said they found the human growth hormone Hygetropin in Angle’s car.

Angle, 40, was charged with violating the order of protection, harassment, possession of drugs and paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license. He posted bail and is scheduled to appear for a hearing Tuesday on the drug and harassment charges and Wednesday on the charge of violating the protection order, a court clerk said.

Angle won the 220-pound championship at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, defeating Iran’s Abbas Jadidi for the gold medal, and has been a professional wrestler since 1998.
