The L.A. Galaxy’s star underwear model — excuse us, midfielder — David Beckham wasn’t on the field Wednesday, suspended for making a dangerous tackle in his previous game. The English superstar didn’t even make the trip to Chicago with his teammates. (Bollocks!) Frankly, we were bummed — and you’d better believe most of the fans in the sellout crowd were too. Why did we want to see Becks fully clothed on a soccer field? Here are our Top 5 reasons.
“Bend it Like Beckham” isn’t just the title of a coming-of-age flick that totally makes us cry at the end. On the soccer field, Becks is best known for his ability to kick a soccer ball with so much spin that it curves — or bends, if you will — an astonishing distance as it travels through the air.
The dude is really, really good! He is the only Englishman and just the 21st player in history to score goals in three World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006). Can he make it four in 2010?
Beckham, 34, began his professional career with arguably the world’s most popular sports club, Manchester United. Over 12 seasons and more than 300 appearances, he scored more than 80 goals, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 UEFA Champions League.
He’s married to Posh Spice, a.k.a. Victoria Beckham. (Don’t judge — we know you own “Spice World”!)
Beckham, in his third MLS season, has played in two games at Toyota Park and lost both. In 2007, the result even clinched a playoff berth for the Fire. It’s like he’s Chicago’s good-luck charm! SOURCE: MLSNET.COM
