Meredith Becker, nee Osman, 70, of Rockford and a longtime resident of Evanston, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Aug. 11, 2009.

Born in Ottawa, IL, she was raised in Glen Ellyn where she attended Glenbrook High School.

She continued her education at Beloit College and the University of Illinois, where she received a degree in Sociology.

While in college she became a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

She spent the early part of her career at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital, managing a tuberculosis prevention program aimed at underprivileged newborns.

With a strong interest in literacy, books and libraries, she spent many years working as a library aid at Evanston Township High School.

After moving from Evanston to Rockford, she worked for North Suburban Library and retired after 10 years of service at the Medical Library of Rockford Memorial Hospital.

In retirement, she enjoyed playing in several bridge groups and traveled to nearly every state and six of seven continents with her husband Bill.

She was active in W.I.N.G., which was affiliated with New American Theater, and did substantial volunteer work with Midway Village and Museum Center in Rockford.

One of her proudest activities was a long-time affiliation with the Rockford Woman’s Club where she held several officer positions.

She was also a member of the Rockford Area Illini Club and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.

In addition to her husband Bill of nearly 50 years; she leaves loving children, Barbara (Ramesh Mani) of Minneapolis, MN, Amy of Superior, CO and Bill (Jennifer Wright) of Evanston, IL; granddaughter Amelia Mani of Minneapolis, MN; sister Carol Ann (John) Schaidler of Neenah, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside Services will be held on Aug. 22, 2009.
