No matter which way you say it (“toh-mah-to” or “toh-may-toh”), one thing is certain: Tomatoes add a rich flavor to any dish. In honor of Carlucci’s Tomato Fest, the restaurant is hosting an afternoon tomato cooking class to school participants in the many ways the vegetable (or is it a fruit?) can augment each course of a meal — even dessert. Executive chef Kevin Provenzano will share his grandmother’s recipe for Italian panzanella, in addition to teaching the class how to prepare tomato fettuccine with asparagus, lemon cream sauce and parmesan, from scratch. At the end of the session, everyone can dig in and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Reservations are required. 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Carlucci Restaurant, 1801 Butterfield Rd., Downers Grove. $50; 630-512-0990 or carluccirestaurant.com
