Know that end-of-summer feeling? Or what it’s like saying goodbye to a loved one at the airport? Or trying to sprint to an “L” platform only to hear a train pull away?

That uncomfortable, running-out-of-time feeling is starting to set in on the North and South sides.

The Cubs and White Sox are trying not to play themselves out of playoff spots. The former first-place teams better start acting fast.

If they don’t find a way to make the most of the remainder of the season quickly, a lot more Chicago sports fans will start using their time differently.

Like counting down to football season.

Friday

Orioles at White Sox, 7 p.m., CSN

There’s not much in the reliability department of the White Sox. But Gavin Floyd (below) could be their most dependable starter. He’s 7-2 in his last 14 starts and has allowed one earned run or fewer in nine of those outings. Catch the rest of the series at 6 p.m. Saturday on WGN-Ch. 9 and 1 p.m. Sunday on CSN.

Cubs at Dodgers, 9 p.m., CSN+, CLTV

Randy Wells has held the opposition to three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his 18 starts. That might not be so easy against the team with the best batting average in the National League. Watch the rest of the series at 3 p.m. Saturday on WFLD-Ch. 32 and 3 p.m. Sunday on WGN-Ch. 9.

Saturday

Sunday

Giants at Bears, 7 p.m., WFLD-Ch. 32

No Brett Favre or Michael Vick drama? How boring! Bears fans will just have to settle for a little exhibition football.

Rapids at Fire, 5 p.m., WPWR-Ch. 50

Acquiring points is crucial for the Fire, which is trying to catch up with Columbus as the season winds down.

Wyndham Championship, 2 p.m., WBBM-Ch. 2

It’s doubtful this final round will match the excitement of last week’s PGA Championship, when Tiger Woods was defeated by Y.E. Yang. Those two won’t be in the field, but check out Fred Couples, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott.

Yankees at Red Sox, 7 p.m., ESPN

The Red Sox are hoping to avoid the headache the Yankees caused earlier this month with a four-game sweep. With hopes of staying in the wild-card race, the Red Sox need to pick up some games at home against their biggest rival.
