President Obama is asking Americans to volunteer on Sept. 11, making this year’s anniversary of the terror attacks the first National Day of Service and Remembrance, organizers announced Thursday. David Paine, president of MyGoodDeed, joined others to unveil a national campaign to build support for the privately funded effort.

Rocket firing canceled

A mechanical failure forced a NASA contractor on Thursday to call off the first test firing of the main part of NASA’s powerful new moon rocket. Alliant Techsystems called off the rocket burn with just 20 seconds left on the countdown clock. It was a setback for the carefully staged,$75 million event.

Nude model arrested

It seems the only nudes allowed at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are the ones in the collection. Police say they arrested a 26-year-old woman who was posing naked for a photographer, and in full view of visitors, in the museum on Wednesday.

19 dead in attack

A suicide bomber attacked the main border crossing for convoys ferrying supplies to U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan on Thursday, killing at least 19 security officers, officials said.

8 charged in Arctic Sea case

Russia has formally filed criminal charges against eight alleged hijackers of the freighter Arctic Sea, whose voyage is still heavily shrouded in mystery. The General Prosecutor’s Investigative Committee said Thursday seven of the suspects are being charged with kidnapping and piracy and the eighth with organizing the crimes.
