Red Sox: Tim Wakefield was scratched from his next scheduled start on Tuesday because of his balky back. … Minor-league outfielder Joey Gathright was acquired from the Orioles for a player to be named or cash. Gathright started the season with the Cubs but was traded in May to Baltimore, which sent Gathright to the minors.
Twins: The team announced the signing of left-handed reliever Ron Mahay on Saturday, less than a week after the Royals released him. Reliever R.A. Dickey was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Rays: Second baseman Akinori Iwamura was activated from the 60-day disabled list after recovering from left knee surgery. Iwamura, who missed 81 games, was hitting .310 with 16 RBIs in 44 games when he got injured.
Mariners: First baseman Russell Branyan was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated disk in his back. He tweaked his back on a check swing Friday against the Royals.
National League
Dodgers: Hiroki Kuroda threw 35 pitches, most of them from behind a protective screen, during a simulated game, as he hopes to return from a concussion. Kuroda was hit on the right side of the head by Rusty Ryal’s line drive in a game against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 15.
Padres: Outfielder Kyle Blanks was placed on the 15-day disabled list after aggravated a strained right arch on Friday night while rounding the bases on a two-run homer. Left-hander Wade LeBlanc was called up from Triple-A Portland.
Diamondbacks: Outfielder Chris Young was recalled from Triple-A Reno and catcher Chris Snyder was placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back pain.
Reds: Left-hander Matt Maloney was called up from Triple-A Louisville to make the start against the Dodgers.
Marlins: Right-handers Luis Ayala and Tim Wood were recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.
