N.Y. Mets 4, Cubs 1

Cubs manager Lou Piniella says he isn’t keeping an eye on the wild-card standings, where his team has four others to pass.

“I don’t pay attention to anything,” he said. “Nobody gives us a chance. Just keep it that way.”

They will keep it that way unless the Cubs start playing better than they did Sunday, when they lost to the Mets 4-1 in front of 39,907 fans at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs did win two of the three games against the Mets and now play host to the Houston Astros before the White Sox arrive for a makeup game Thursday.

Starter Carlos Zambrano still has not won since July 22, although that also includes time on the disabled list with back spasms.

In 3 1/3 innings, Zambrano allowed 11 hits and four runs. Only three of the runs were earned, although the error was made by Zambrano on a bad pickoff throw toward second base.

In two starts since returning from the DL, Zambrano has given up 18 hits and 12 runs in 7 2/3 innings.
