Mammograms challenged

Women in their 40s should stop having annual mammograms and older women should cut back to one scheduled exam every other year, a federal task force has concluded. The panel that sets government policy on prevention recommended the radical change, saying the potential harm to women having annual exams beginning at age 40 outweighs the benefits.

Hunger numbers grow

More than one in seven American households struggled to put enough food on the table in 2008, the highest rate since the Agriculture Department began tracking food security levels in 1995. That’s about 49 million people. The numbers are a significant increase from 2007, when 11.1 percent of U.S. households suffered from what USDA classifies as “food insecurity” — not having enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle.

Body of missing girl found

A missing 5-year-old whose mother was accused of offering her for sex was found dead off a heavily wooded road in rural North Carolina on Monday, police said. Fayetteville Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance declined to comment on a cause of death or the condition of Shaniya Davis’ body. Two people have been charged in her disappearance, including her mother, Antoinette Davis.

Men granted marriage license

Two men were granted a marriage license in Argentina’s capital Monday, breaking ground in a country and region where laws ban gay marriage. Jose Maria Di Bello and his partner Alex Freyre won the right to get married when a judge in Buenos Aires ruled last week that a ban on gay marriage violates Argentina’s constitution.
