For Jay Cutler and the Bears, night games have been downright scary. Even worse, their pathetic performances have been on national TV in prime time. Here’s a look at those games and what RedEye thinks might be behind the poor play.
Sept. 13 at Green Bay
Packers 21, Bears 15
What happened: The Cutler era starts off with a … whimper. Cutler has a career-worst game, throwing four interceptions for the first time.
But wait, it gets worse: Brian Urlacher is lost for the season with a wrist injury.
What might have caused it: This was Cutler’s first game with the Bears, so let’s cut him some slack. He was just … nervous.
Oct. 18 at Atlanta
Falcons 21, Bears 14
What happened: Cutler throws two TDs, but also two picks, including one in the red zone.
But wait, it gets worse: Matt Forte fumbled on back-to-back carries inside the five-yard line in another red zone meltdown.
What might have caused it: The Bears were still spooked by their failure to win in Atlanta last year when they took the lead with 11 seconds left, only to give up a field goal on the last play of the game.
Nov. 12 at San Francisco
49ers 10, Bears 6
What happened: Cutler tops his Green Bay performance, throwing a career-worst five interceptions, including two in the — you guessed it — red zone.
But wait, it gets worse: The Bears fall to third in the NFC North behind dreaded Minnesota and hated Green Bay.
What might have caused it: The Bears were distracted by the beautiful weather. That’d be a nice problem to have right about now.
