Hidden agenda
On the agenda: “G.I.F.T.” at Firehouse Square, 459 N. Wolcott Ave., 312-226-9633; collaboraction.org
Check it out if you … believe watching theater doesn’t have to be a stationary experience, think a gift’s retail price is not a measure of its worth, are looking for a holiday show that doesn’t have any Christmas trees or reindeer.
The deets: “G.I.F.T.,” Collaboraction theater company’s premiere show in its new West Town venue, takes the audience on a tour of the 7,000-square-foot warehouse and soundstage. Viewers start by walking a rocky path lined by scented candles and listening to a recording of people discussing the nature of gifts. They then move into a room where performers dance, mime and hand out strange gifts such papier-mache objects that viewers eventually give back. After a walk past lamps outside, guests enter a more conventional stage space, where the production explores different types of gifts through theater games, skits, music and poetry. Dress warm; the play finishes with a bonfire outside. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 29. Tickets are $15-$25.
The payoff: A new way of thinking about gifts and theater.
