Running backs used to be the NFL’s workhorses, playing almost every down and bruising and bashing their way to a few yards a carry. But between splitting carries and suffering injuries seemingly every week, nowadays running backs seem about as tough as the mopey girl from “Twilight.” Anyway, here’s a look at this week’s RB injuries.
Cedric Benson
The league’s most unlikely MVP candidate is considered “day to day” at the moment, so check his status Saturday. Keep backup Bernard Scott around just in case, but avoid Larry Johnson until further notice. The Bengals have a good matchup against the porous Browns.
Clinton Portis
If Portis is cleared to return from his concussion this week, he’s worth a start at Philly. If he’s out again, avoid the collection of spare parts behind him: Rock Cartwright, Quinton Ganther, a 55-year-old John Riggins — whomever they trot out there.
Julius Jones
His backup Justin Forsett is an intriguing fantasy starter against the hapless Rams on Sunday. As for the injury-prone Jones, he’s a borderline starter at best if he’s back from his rib boo-boo.
Michael Turner
The Burner says he thinks he could return soon, but high-ankle sprains aren’t easy on players who rely on their ability to shift and juke their feet. His backup Jason Snelling should be worth playing this week against Tampa Bay.
Steve Slaton
OK, so Slaton isn’t technically injured — unless you consider fumblitis a physical or mental disorder — but his role is still up in the air. Start him with caution.

The White Sox have expressed interest in free agent and longtime nemesis Coco Crisp, according to his agent. “I have talked to (general manager) Kenny Williams on a preliminary basis,” Steve Compte said Tuesday. “We’re going to be a little patient. We haven’t talked dollars.”
Someone in the Bears organization at a level above general manager Jerry Angelo has begun surveying options for changing the coach or general manager, or both, according to Hub Arkush, a football expert on WSCR-AM 670 and publisher of Pro Football Weekly.
Denis Hamlett was relieved of his duties Tuesday as coach of the Fire after the team fell one game short of earning an MLS Cup berth. The club announced that Hamlett’s contract will not be renewed. Fire technical director Frank Klopas will manage the team until a new coach is named.
