While many Chicagoans shopped till they dropped on Black Friday, another group of people trekked out to Midway Airport in the early hours of the morning. Nope, Midway wasn’t having a clearance sale on cute clothes — though there was plenty of cuteness.

Pet Airways and Best Friends Animal Society teamed up to help rescue 50 dogs from a puppy mill and animal shelter in Missouri and bus them to Chicago to catch a Pet Airways flight to New York.

And the dogs would be traveling in style. As they made their way to new homes in Port Washington, N.Y., their carriers would be placed in the main cabin — not the cargo space.

Dan Wiesel, president and CEO of Pet Airways, told TheMash he was ecstatic that the rescue was pulled off so well.

“This is our first time doing this, and I feel that it definitely can be done for years to come,” he said.

Pet Airways donated the flight in order to help the rescued pets make their way to a happier life.

Wiesel said his father taught him at an early age to care for animals.

“My father always told me to love the animals among us, and I am sure he would be proud to witness this day,” Wiesel said.
