Death sentence for Dugan
A judge imposed the death sentence on Brian Dugan on Wednesday for kidnapping, raping and killing 10-year-old Jeanine Nicarico of Naperville, and set the execution date for Feb. 25.
“The wheels of justice were often derailed for Jeanine,” Judge George Bakalis said in accepting a jury’s sentence of death and setting the execution date on the 27th anniversary of Nicarico’s death.
Cop hurt in fire rescue
A Chicago police officer was hurt this morning while rescuing a woman from the second floor of a burning home on the Far South Side.
The officer suffered smoke inhalation, as did a civilian, in the blaze in the 10400 block of South King Drive. The fire broke out at about 6:50 a.m., police said. The officer was patrolling the area when he heard a report of the fire on his radio and went to the scene.
