Monday was the first day of the city’s new parking meter rate increase, including a jump from $3.50 to $4.25 per hour in the Loop. We asked RedEye’s Twitter followers and Facebook fans for their opinions on the situation and the rate hike.
Park it at RedEye anytime you want — for free! We’re on Twitter at @redeyechicago and on Facebook at facebook.com/TheRedEye.
John Atkins: They should put up toll booths to charge non-city residents to bring their cars into the city. I live in the burbs and have no problem with that.
Tina Davis: Looks like more time on the el!!!
@joeavella: Unbelievable. Soon it will just be cheaper to get a parking ticket.
@drewmcnaughton: $4.25 an hour is a way better deal than any Loop parking garage, and you can pay w/ a Credit Card. Why the complaints?
@Brneyed1: for this price there’s no benefit to street parking … might as well park in a covered self-park garage now!
@BVAX: Don’t own a car. Between the meters and gas prices. It’s becoming less and less desirable.
@AGMahoney: Ridiculous. How much did the city spend on Christmas decorations? I love them, but just sayin’…
@chuckoliva: that’s a quarter less then taking the train to downtown and back. CTA FTW!
@joshkorin: at those ridiculous rates why not park in a garage? at least you won’t have to chisel off your windshield in the garage!
@ClevelandChick: That is exactly why I don’t even drive in Chicago anymore. Parking is enough to make me want to gouge my eyes out.
