“The Best American Nonrequired Reading”
Edited by Dave Eggers
Introduction by Marjane Satrapi
Mariner, 413 pages, $14
In this annual collection, which benefits 826 National, Dave Eggers’ youth literacy programs in seven cities nationwide, there are a few highlights: Jonathan Franzen’s tribute to David Foster Wallace and Denis Johnson’s reporting from Iraq. There are beautiful pieces by fresh, compelling voices — from Chicago — such as Eula Biss and Rebekah Frumkin. The volume is a reminder that literature can take the form of a parlor game of lists, from best descriptions on Craigslist, best lawsuits, best kids letters to President Barack Obama and, my favorite, best “class notes” from alumni magazines.
