Back in 1985 when the Bears’ radio rights switched from WBBM-AM 780 to WGN-AM 720, then WGN general manager Dan Fabian suggested — tongue in cheek — to Bears President Michael McCaskey that the team should give its first-round draft pick the number 720, in honor of the team’s new radio partner.
The Bears then drafted William “The Refrigerator” Perry and gave him jersey No. 72.
