I wish to comment on the article “The costs of cheap meat” that appeared in the Sept. 24 edition. Growing up on a farm where cattle were raised, I know that beef comes from people who care about the animals and the environment. My family has raised cattle for three generations. The animals we sell to the packer produce wholesome, safe and nutritious food for consumers. It is the same beef that our family enjoys. We take pride in raising a delicious and healthy product in a responsible manner. Contrary to what the article suggests, by law, no meat sold in the U.S. can contain antibiotic residues that violate FDA standards. Also, there are 29 cuts of beef that meet USDA’s definition of lean. Animal protein and plant protein are not the same. The protein in lean beef contains all the essential amino acids that your body needs to fuel an active and healthy lifestyle.
