I have lived in the Chicago area for almost 40 years and have always subscribed to the Tribune but this is the first time I have been moved enough to write to you.
I cannot understand why you would choose to endorse Bob Dold in the 10th District Congressional race. I do not believe that Dold is “moderate,” “pro-choice” or “independent,” the three adjectives you used to describe him in your Oct. 7 editorial.
Some of the very groups that endorsed Mark Kirk in past elections — the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood and the Human Rights Campaign — have come out with endorsements for Democrat Dan Seals in 2010. Planned Parenthood, in fact, has identified the 10th District race as one of the Top 10 contests “for women’s health and reproductive rights” in the nation.
Bob Dold, on the other hand, was “recommended” by the Illinois Federation for Right to Life during the Republican primary. He was also endorsed by Phyllis Schlafly and her Eagle Forum. Now that he is seeking the votes of our socially moderate, largely Democratic district, Dold wants to distance himself from these right-wing groups. He apparently succeeded in pulling the wool over the eyes of the Tribune editorial board.
I just hope he does not succeed with the voters of our district.
