MINNEAPOLIS — Tears started to form in Devin Hester’s eyes as he recognized the players responsible for clearing the way for his record-setting 14th kick-return touchdown.
“I really love those guys, you know,” a choked-up Hester said before pausing to control his emotions. “I hate sitting here taking all the glory. I wish those other 10 guys were up here and y’all were asking them the questions.”
As Hester exited the field Monday, Rashied Davis, one of Hester’s many blockers, screamed out, “The best ever.”
Indeed, Hester is.
His 64-yard punt return in the third quarter solidified him as the most prolific return man in NFL history. It was his 14th kick-return touchdown, surpassing Brian Mitchell.
Hester’s 14th came in his 74th game and his 286th return. It took Mitchell 223 games and 1,070 returns to get 13.
“I told you a long time ago I knew he would set the record one day,” Mitchell told the Tribune on Monday night. “I am totally excited for him. I love to see anyone bring that kind of excitement to the return game. It’s great for the game for special teams to get this kind of recognition.”
Hester also tied Eric Metcalf’s record with his 10th punt-return touchdown. He explained why his emotions got the best of him for a moment.
“Just coming out of college, coaches told me I wasn’t going to be anything but a kickoff and punt returner,” Hester said. “But I’m here today to say I am a kickoff and punt returner, but at the same time, I’m the best to ever do it.”
