In response to Ellen Warren’s recent column regarding gym do’s and don’ts (“Gym etiquette: Work it out,” Jan. 14). I am in agreement with everything in her article besides one item and that is this growing notion that weightlifters must lift weights in absolute silence.

As a person who does Olympic weight lifting, I find this notion absurd. I challenge Ms. Warren, or anyone for that matter, to do 20 heavy deadlifts or squat thrusts in a row without making any noise. When you life a heavy weight, sometimes you grunt.

The idea that some gyms will even expel members who grunt is even more ridiculous. Come on, people, if you want to meditate, go to an ashram!
