Page 1, “An egg is not a baby bird,” is followed by Page 2, “except if” and that pattern of reversals carries on till the end, which is the end not only of the book but of the sentence on Page 1. In addition to fun for grammarians, the book delivers goofy exception after goofy exception, piling a story up in a slow pace syncopated with giggles. Visually, we start with a light blue egg with a crack, and we end, not in any rush, with what comes out of it.
