Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center (

Voice of the People

, April 11) cites five cases of “concealed carry killers” who went on sprees of multiple murders.

I checked the VPC website and found its Concealed Carry Killers page listing those mass murders and many other individual murders by concealed carry permit holders — 297 killings since 2007.

Strangely, that page lacks any statistics on the number of similar killings by those without such permits. That’s information we need for judging Sugarmann’s claim that “concealed handgun permit holders account for the majority of the most horrific and devastating mass shootings of the past few years.”

Leaving that aside, Sugarmann’s argument seems to assume that people willing and determined to commit mass murder will somehow be deterred by laws forbidding them to own and carry the guns they plan to use. Really? Just roll that idea around in your head for a while and see how much sense it makes to you.
