I never can read a Byrne commentary without wondering what planet he’s on. His statement yesterday that Truman would be aghast by our current debts compared to World War II and that today’s “national emergencies” pale in comparison completely dismisses the fact that the last Republican president that he’s so fond of started and badly managed one necessary war, invented and badly managed one unnecessary war and funded all of it off the budget, turning a budget surplus into the huge debts we have today. He’s right on one thing: Truman would be aghast.
