Your otherwise excellent editorial grading the performance of the Illinois legislature is unfortunately marred by the accompanying sentiment, “Illinois citizens deserve better than they get.”
No, we don’t. We keep re-electing the same feckless legislators who maintain essentially the same bloated, corrupt system, who continue to run up huge debt and stiff the state’s suppliers, who have cultivated a culture of dependency and cronyism, who will neither adequately fund our public employee pensions nor reform them, who will attempt to extort every cent possible from the already squeezed taxpayer, and for whom no goal is more lofty than their own re-election.
It is only we who enable them to be who and what they are. The old comic strip character Pogo’s observation was never more apt: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
