Where have the highest winds in the world been recorded?

In 2010, the World Meteorological Organization declared a 253-mph gust in 1996 on Barrow Island in Australia during Cyclone Olivia to be the highest wind ever recorded. It broke the record held for more than 60 years by an April 12, 1934, gust of 231 mph that was recorded at the Mount Washington Observatory at the summit of 6,288-foot Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
