After a month of warnings, Highland Park police on Friday will begin handing out $120 tickets to drivers they catch talking on a cellphone.
The new law went into effect June 1, but officers have only been warning drivers. The one-month grace period was meant to get drivers used to the new law without hitting their pocketbooks, said Highland Park Police Sgt. Chris O’Neill.
Police officers and drivers of emergency vehicles while on-duty and acting in their official capacities will be allowed to use cellphones, and so will drivers using a phone to contact police in an emergency. Those who pull over and park to talk on cellphones need have no fear of tickets.
Since cellphone tickets are considered moving violations, people who get multiple tickets may see their drivers licenses affected.
