It is often assumed that adults can read and write. This assumption, however, is very misleading. Based on statistics, millions of adults in the United States read below the eighth-grade level and have trouble understanding a newspaper story or filling out a job application. The inability to read disables them from functioning effectively in a workforce, their households and their society. There are adults who need your help. By becoming a literacy volunteer you can help build a stronger community and more stable future while helping others build their skills. In giving of yourself and your spare time, you can provide a priceless service to your community. This will not only help them, but it will also help you. So think about it–you can make a difference.
