Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig Thursday night said that he may have to mediate the Theo Epstein negotiations between the Cubs and the Red Sox.
“It is a possibility,” Selig told Chris Russo host of SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio. “No question, it is a possibility.”
A Red Sox source told ESPNBoston.com that compensation for Epstein is still not resolved and there is no timetable on when it might be.
Meanwhile, a major league source said that, “Both sides just have dug in their heels. It shouldn’t have been this tough. This was a simple process, but it just seemed that both sides needed to come out of it with the feeling they won. And until that happens, there won’t be a deal.”
If the Cubs and Red Sox can’t announce a deal Friday, they will presumably have to wait until Tuesday, the next off day for the World Series.
