Until pro football teams, including the Soldier Field klutzes formerly known as Da Bears, provide backup quarterbacks with enough playing time — before, not after their first starts ever — let’s avoid slamming Caleb Hanie. Hanie was on par with some of Cutler’s raggedly performances before he started playing well this season.
The kid looks like he’s got an arm and some ability to run. He might just work out. But let’s not condemn him to football purgatory, until he gets a few games under his belt.
Also, while he’s recuperating, let’s have Cutler write on the team blackboard, “Quarterbacks, especially Bear quarterbacks, must avoid tackling opponents like the plague.”
