Andrew Broy is using confusing numbers to defend the mediocrity of many Chicago charter schools. First, he complained about the selective high schools being included in the data on public high schools. He neglected to mention qualified but not-accepted selective school candidates, who do attend charter schools. Second, he forgot to say that charter schools are also selective in that parents have to be motivated to enter the lottery, show up on the day if their child happens to win the lottery or lose their charter spot, and make sure that their children are not pressured by punitive measures to leave charters if they are not performing up to standards.
