On behalf of Children’s Memorial Hospital and the patients and families we are privileged to serve, we would like to share a few thoughts about the gift of Maggie Daley to Chicago and to all children.
In 1981, the Daleys lost their little boy, Kevin, to spina bifida. Our medical team had the honor to care for him. At that time, the life expectancy for these children was very low. Kevin’s neurosurgeon, Dr. David McLone, was driven to change the future for other children who had spina bifida ? his goal was simple yet profound ? that children with spina bifida would grow up to live independently and participate in our society.
Because of his commitment and thanks to advances in medical treatments, children with spina bifida are living into adulthood, graduating from college, working, marrying and having children of their own. With tremendous support from Mayor Daley and Anixter Center, Anixter Village, the first ever independent housing development was created for young adults with spina bifida on the west side of Chicago.
Maggie and Rich Daley were transformed by their experience with Kevin. As the chief stewards of our city, they took the opportunity to speak and be heard about the importance of protecting and nurturing children, especially those who were ill, disabled or in need. They implored all adults to observe, listen to and guide the children around them so they could find their talents and discover the hope and healing that comes when someone believes in them.
Perhaps Maggie’s greatest gift was turning a void into an oasis. Whether a program, garden or safe haven, she knew all children need a special place to grow and thrive.
Maggie has handed the torch to all of us in her passing, flame first. Her fire and passion on behalf of children illuminate our paths and reinforce our commitment to the wellbeing of all children. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Maggie, but heartened by her enduring light in our lives and in Chicago’s children, now and for generations to come.
