Alma beer:
Frontera Grill and Goose Island are becoming a prolific combination. On the heels of Marisol, a spicy, fruity white beer on tap at the restaurant and soon to be bottled, we now have Alma. Also co-designed by Frontera patriarch Rick Bayless and Goose brewer Jared Rouben, it’s a dark hefeweizen meant to be paired with food, particularly grilled meats and mole.
Alma (which means “
soul”
in Spanish) succeeds by mingling so many wonderful components at once: It’s chocolaty, slightly nutty, lightly spiced with clove, effervescent and clean. Its crisp, bright body is crossed with a full mouth-feel that leaves the palate with a light but rich zest. Mildly sweet, Alma is never cloying and indeed a fine food complement thanks to its own complex flavor.
The bad news: It won’t be around long, possibly gone within the next week. The good news: Goose and Frontera have more collaborations on the way, including a beer called Corazon (which means “
heart”
) that is expected to be around longer.
