Some tips for spotting the Lyrids from Mark Hammergren, astronomer at the Adler Planetarium.

Find a dark place.

Go far from cities and the accompanying urban glow. Suburbs aren’t much better. Rural areas are best.

Bring binoculars or a telescope.

You’ll be better off with your naked eyes — and a wide field of view — as you scan for quick-moving meteoroids, but there will be plenty of downtime to spend looking at the constellations.

Don’t get there early.

The show won’t start until around 9 p.m., and you’ll need to rest up if you’re going to make it until dawn.

Be patient.

Don’t go inside or stare at your smartphone. Your eyes need to adjust to the dark, or you’ll miss the show.
