Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 1: Matt Garza pitched seven scoreless innings and Darwin Barney hit a two-run homer as Chicago finished off a three-game sweep at home.
Garza (5-7) scattered five hits and a walk, striking out seven. He retired the last eight hitters he faced, and the Diamondbacks did not advance a runner past second base until Aaron Hill connected for a solo home run against reliever Shawn Camp with two outs in the eighth inning.
Carlos Marmol picked up his 10th save, yielding a walk and single before getting the final two outs of a scoreless ninth after James Russell notched the first out..
Barney provided what would prove to be the winning runs when he sent a 1-2 pitch from Trevor Cahill (7-8) over the left-field wall in the second inning. Anthony Rizzo had put the Cubs on the board with an RBI single in the opening frame.
Cahill went 5 1/3 innings in defeat, giving up three runs on just four hits. He didnâ??t get much help from an Arizona lineup that produced just three runs during the three-game series.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cahill was 2-for-2 at the plate after going just 2-for-35 over his first 17 games of the season. … The Cubs avenged a three-game sweep on the road at Arizona last month. … Chicago has won four straight for just the second time this season. Both streaks have come in the last three weeks.
