Recap: Twins 7, Royals 5

Twins 7, Royals 5: Ryan Doumit went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs as visiting Minnesota captured the rubber game of the three-game series.

Brian Dozier added a two-run double and Samuel Deduno tossed 6 1/3 solid innings for the Twins, who have won just five of their last 15 contests.

Doumit opened the scoring in the second with a leadoff blast and duplicated the feat in the sixth to complete his second two-homer performance of the season. The 31-year-old, who went deep from both sides of the plate, added a two-run single during Minnesota’s four-run third that created a 5-0 advantage.

Deduno (1-0) allowed one run and six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in his third career start. The 29-year-old Dominican made six relief appearances with Colorado and San Diego over the last two seasons.

Jeremy Guthrie (0-1) was tagged for five runs and four hits over five innings in his Kansas City debut. The veteran right-hander, who was acquired from Colorado on Friday, walked three and struck out four in losing his sixth straight decision.

All-Star Billy Butler and pinch hitter Yuniesky Betancourt homered for the Royals, who completed a 3-7 homestand.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Royals SS Alcides Escobar and manager Ned Yost were ejected by second base umpire D.J. Reyburn in the middle of the ninth inning for excessive arguing. … Twins CF Denard Span was in the starting lineup after leaving Saturday’s game in the eighth inning with dizziness, which was attributed to the heat. … Minnesota 3B Trevor Plouffe sat out his second straight contest after suffering a bruised right thumb in Friday’s victory. Plouffe is expected to be in the lineup Monday against the Chicago White Sox.
