MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – INSIDE PITCH
The Marlins will continue to take a close look the rest of the season at their two young pitching prospects, Jacob Turner and Nathan Eovaldi.
“We’re looking at them this season to see if they can help us next season,” manager Ozzie Guillen said.
“What I’m looking for, strikes. I think Eovaldi every time he had problems he can’t find the strike zone. Turner did great attacking the strike zone, and that’s what I’m looking for. They are going to compete next year.”
Eovaldi is 3-3 with a 5.33 ERA in six starts since joining the Marlins in the trade that sent Hanley Ramirez to the Dodgers. He has 16 strikeouts and 18 walks. He will face Mets ace R.A. Dickey on Friday.
Eovaldi said he’s looking for better command of his pitches and to limit his walks during what will amount to a two-month evaluation period.
“I know spots aren’t officially taken and I have a chance (next year),” he said.
Turner’s next start will be sometime next week. He gave up five runs in a loss to Washington on Wednesday, but he has struck out 11 and walked none in 11 innings over his first two Marlins starts.
“I don’t mind people getting hit. I mind when people start walking everyone. I still think this kid’s got a lot of potential,” Guillen said.

MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – NOTES, QUOTES
–RHP Heath Bell wants another chance to close before the end of the season, but he hasn’t given manager Ozzie Guillen any indication he’s ready. Bell allowed two runs in the ninth inning Wednesday in an 8-4 loss to Washington. He has a 5.79 ERA in 11 August appearances, and batters are hitting .333 against him in those games.
–SS Jose Reyes has hit in 13 of his last 18 games since his 26-game hitting streak ended Aug. 9 against R.A. Dickey and the Mets.
–RHP Carlos Zambrano isn’t happy about being in the bullpen. But the former Marlins starter has done well in that role — 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in nine appearances since losing his rotation spot at the beginning of June.
–RF Giancarlo Stanton has 10 home runs in August, tied with San Diego’s Chase Headley for the most among NL players in the month. Stanton is batting .419 with three homers in eight games this year against the Mets.
–C John Buck takes a .199 batting average into Friday. He is wrapping up his best month of the season — he hit .333 in 17 games in August.
BY THE NUMBERS: 10 — Home runs in 21 games in August for Giancarlo Stanton, a club record for the month. Gary Sheffield had the previous record, nine home runs in August 1996.
