Tribune Newspapers’ Matt Murschel ranks the top contenders

Geno Smith, West Virginia QB: He’s on pace to pass for more than 5,000 yards with 60 touchdowns and is completing 83 percent of his passes. Smith could use a big win Saturday at Texas to bolster his case.

Braxton Miller, Ohio State QB: Miller’s numbers aren’t as gaudy as Smith’s, but his leadership skills were on display last week when he led the Buckeyes on a 74-yard touchdown drive to beat Michigan State. Tough Nebraska defense will be a challenge Saturday.

EJ Manuel, Florida State QB: He has thrown for more than 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns with only one interception, and he faces the ACC’s worst pass defense Saturday at N.C. State.

Collin Klein, Kansas State QB: The dual threat has helped give the Wildcats the No. 2 rushing offense in the Big 12, and he faces weak Kansas defensive Saturday.

De’Anthony Thomas, Oregon RB: He came through with 26 rushing yards, including a 4-yard TD, during the crucial third quarter last week vs. Washington State. Thomas faces the Pac-12’s No. 2 defense in Washington on Saturday.
