On some level, after human life is not at risk and water continues to suppress a fire, I think firefighters are like the rest of us in terms of being sometimes mesmerized by smoke. I was at a warehouse fire recently where winds were sweeping smoke across the empty building like clouds across the top of a mountain. It was strangely engrossing. Of course, the professionals around always have to be prepared in case something blows up unexpectedly or takes a turn for the worse. But after I sent some pictures, I kept watching the smoke trails – glad I wasn’t in the path of the wind and suffering the air that we know is probably all too toxic.
