Name: Bergans of Norway Rondane 30L Backpack

What it is: A medium-size, top-loading lightweight backpack that has adjustable shoulder straps, compression straps, a chest strap and a hip belt. A large main zippered compartment features a large interior pouch that can hold a hydration pack or help separate clothing from gear. Other pockets include a smaller zippered compartment and an exterior pouch with a clasplike closure. Two side pockets are great for holding refillable water bottles if you don’t carry a hydration pouch. The pack is designed for people from 5 feet tall to 6 feet 6 inches.

The good: As a woman with narrow shoulders, I love the adjustability of the shoulder harness and the support of the hip band. This lightweight daypack became my best friend on trips to Alaska and Dubai, where I often explored from dawn till dusk. I packed a camera pocket from the camera bag I left at home to protect my DSLR camera when I toted it in the Rondane. The pack easily holds a change of clothes, a towel, extra shoes, a D-SLR camera, an iPhone and backup batteries for phone and camera. At home, I squeeze my yoga mat into the large compartment if I’m walking to class. Because it has no interior frame, the Rondane is a snap to pack because it lies flat. I have squeezed it into suitcases when I thought there was not enough space for it.

The bad: There is no padded compartment or optional accessory to protect cameras and other sensitive electronics.
