“Hi there, my name is Anthony Souffle. I’m a photographer at the Chicago Tribune. I’m going to take some pictures, but please, just pretend I’m not here.”

I feel like that’s almost always how I introduce myself. I’m sure I say it every day I’m working to at least a few of the five or six new people I meet. Normally I’d offer a smile, maybe a handshake while reciting “please don’t be mean to me” in the back of my head. Blogging doesn’t allow for the handshake, but I am reciting.

As I mentioned, I’m a photojournalist for the

Chicago Tribune

. Today, along with my colleague

Brian Cassella

, I’m launching a blog here at chicagotribune.com.

For background, I grew up in southern Illinois just outside of St. Louis in the town of Collinsville. I started taking photographs when I was in high school with the encouragement of a very kind and patient journalism teacher. Afterwards I went on to attend Southern Illinois University. During school I interned in the photo departments of the

Muskegon Chronicle

(Mich.), the

Naples Daily News

(Fla.),

The Gazette

(Colorado Springs, Colo.), the

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

and the

Minneapolis Star-Tribune

.

I’ve been on staff here at the

Chicago Tribune

since January of 2013 and I cover all manner of assignments. Aside of daily work, I’m also part the overnight breaking news team as well as our Bears coverage. Personally, I live in the city with my wife, a picture editor for Tribune Content Agency, and our much loved dog Elsa (not named for the Disney character).

As for this space, No Filters, I’m hoping to share some stories about my experiences on the job. Everything from a funny feature the newspaper didn’t have space for, a disastrous tale of an assignment gone wrong, or some interesting backstory behind a frame. I’m also happy to answer any questions and love feedback of all sorts. Please, feel free to email me at asouffle@tribune.com. I’m also on

Twitter @anthonysouffle

where I muse on nights spent with breaking news reporter

Peter Nickeas

.
