Boating safety tips:

* Have and wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

* Have a reliable way to call for help in an emergency, such as a marine radio, cellphone in waterproof case (though reception is not always reliable) or a personal locator beacon. Even a whistle or signal mirror is better than nothing.

* File a float plan with someone on shore.

* Wear clothing appropriate for the water temperature.

* Take a general boating class for the type of vessel you will be using.

* As soon as you think someone is missing or in trouble, call 911. If you have a VHF-FM marine radio on board, use Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) to contact the Coast Guard. Details are important: Describe the vessel, where it was heading and people on board. What equipment do they have?

* Be properly prepared. It can be lifesaving when help is limited. Even on a short trip, carry allergy or other medication.
