The mass email on Monday afternoon to the photo staff from our director of photography read something like this:
“If you find yourself in a good spot at moon rise, we’d love some great shots of it.”
Up until that moment I had completely forgotten about the supermoon, or maybe I had blocked it out after several failed attempts at photographing it in the past. I think I’ve made a go at photographing the supermoon each time it’s appeared since I’ve been in Chicago. Each time, because of weather or location, was a total failure.
So on Monday, I decided to give it another shot, and I asked my wife if she wanted to go sit atop a parking garage and wait for the moon to rise. I figured if nothing else, we’d get to enjoy the nice weather and gorgeous view of the skyline. Two hours and half a bag of pistachios later, the moon first started to peek out from behind the buildings. As it rose I looked for things in the foreground that would help add to the picture. Luckily, the green statue of the Virgin Mary atop Notre Dame Catholic Church lined up nicely with red moon.
