In fall, the hills come alive with color, but the welcome mat stays out all year. The artists in this little colony hardly ever stop painting, making pottery, sculpting and weaving, so many of them keep their ateliers open to the public month after month. In the shops of Nashville (county seat) and the rural byways, one can all but overdose on nostalgia, not to mention Vandalia onion mustard, rhubarb fudge and the county’s signature apple butter. Some 350 merchants and restaurateurs await, and just down almost any road, red barns, covered bridges and grazing livestock add to the old-fashioned rural atmosphere.

Robert Cross’ 5 reasons to go

1. Driving through the countryside is reason enough
Byways reveal picturesque farms and quaint little towns like Bean Blossom, Gnaw Bone and Story, known for its old haunted inn.
2. Art galleries and studios
Early in the last century, led by portraitist T.C. Steele, artists formed a colony in Brown County and others have been drawn there ever since. Some open their studios to the public. Steele’s home/studio is a state historic site.
3. Nashville, Ind.
Boutique central for the shoppers–everything from refrigerator magnets to serious art and fine embroidery. At night, the banjos twang and fiddles sing.
4. Festivals
Hardly a week goes by that some kind of event doesn’t stimulate a party atmosphere. Autumn tends to be one big bash.
5. History
Namesake Maj. Gen. Jacob Brown figured prominently in the War of 1812, and some really, really old buildings remain standing. The artists’ colony had been a nationally known cultural treasure for generations.
