Your official endorsement of Bruce Rauner for governor held very few surprises. You endorsed him in the Republican primary and have criticized Gov. Pat Quinn repeatedly for six years.
What was unclear about your endorsement could be found in one paragraph. “We believe a Gov. Rauner would explore changes made by governors of other states with balanced budgets, solid retirement systems and lower unemployment rates.”Changes enacted by other governors to achieve those goals take many, very different forms. Are you suggesting that Illinois become like Gov. Scott Walker’s Wisconsin and cut the right to collective bargaining? Are you suggesting that we frack our way to full employment like North Dakota and put our future drinking water at risk? Or are you suggesting that Gov. Jerry Brown of California has the right way by instituting a fair, progressive income tax that actually brought that state in line with the goals stated above?
Both candidates for governor want to see the finances of Illinois improve. There are many ways to achieve this goal. But electing a man who has given us no details, or confusing and contradictory details, on how to achieve this is not a smart idea.
Candidate Rauner cannot even give us details about his personal finances.
Other questions remain. How will a Gov. Rauner work with the opposite party majority in the General Assembly?
