Notre Dame played about as good of a game in defeat as anyone could possibly play Saturday. The Irish came up just a few yards short against Florida State in one of the best games of the college football season. Here are their grades from the 31-27 loss as they head into an open week.

Offense: A-

Quarterback Everett Golson had nothing to be ashamed of. The Irish ran the ball with authority (120 yards from Tarean Folston) and Golson nearly led a game-winning drive while throwing for 313 yards and three touchdowns.

Defense: B

The first half was a masterstroke defensively. The line got constant pressure on Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston. But the second half was a different story. Florida State picked on the middle of the Irish defense and found consistent gains.

Special teams: B-

Kyle Brindza drilled two field goals, including a 46-yarder in the fourth quarter. He also pinned Florida State inside the 10 on a punt in the fourth quarter. But there was a costly personal foul penalty on Jacob Matuska on a kick return in the fourth quarter that cost Notre Dame precious yardage on a drive in which it didn’t reach field-goal range.

Coaching: B+

Notre Dame was ready to take on the national champions on their turf. The offensive game plan worked, but Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher was able to make adjustments with his offense in the second half that Notre Dame had trouble countering.
