The discussion about the minimum wage is focusing in substantial part on a tree and not the forest. The forest of today’s labor market is an increasing trend toward part-time employment, driven in part by Obamacare. Which raises this question: Setting aside the Obamacare requirement that an employer must subsidize the health care insurance of employees working 30 hours a week or more, what will work best for you: A part-time job of, say, 25 hours a week with an increased minimum wage of, say, $10 an hour, or a full-time job with 40 hours a week that pays, say, $8 an hour?
